Knee Tears And Tears In Your Eyes

Knee tears suck! The knees are the largest and one of the most complex joints in the human body, with the ability to bear up to four times your body-weight. They allow for straightening (extension) and bending (flexion), as well as sliding and rotating.

But when knee tears to the ligaments occur, you may have tears in your eyes from the severe physical and mental pain. As a professional athlete, your career may be at stake with either a medial collateral ligament (MCL) or an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. Below are a list of knee tears type injuries.

  • Medial collateral ligament (MCL) tear

The MCL attaches the femur to the tibia on the inside of the leg, preventing side to side knee movement. When an MCL tear occurs, which can be the result of trauma to the knee (e.g., repeated jumping or sudden twisting movements), the symptoms include moderate pain lasting a few hours, feelings of instability, and lack of full range of motion.

  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Tears

The ACL maintains stability and integrity in your knee by connecting the femur to the tibia, just behind the patella (kneecap). Tears to the ACL are common among athletes and dancers although the severity of the injury can vary from minor sprains to complete ruptures. The common symptoms are immediate instability, severe pain, audible popping sounds and the inability to bear weight on the injured limb.

Fortunately, both types of tears are successfully treated by surgeons, doctors and physical therapists at Healthpointe clinics all over Southern California.
