ACL Tears, PCL Tears, and Meniscus Tears

An ACL tear is the tearing of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament, which connects the upper leg bone (femur) and lower leg bone (shin). A PCL tear is a tear of the Posterior Cruciate Ligament, which is a ligament in the back of the knee that connects the femur and shinbone. A Meniscus tear is a tear of a ligament located in the front of the knee, which serves to “cushion” the joint.
ACL, PCL, and meniscus tears can all occur through sudden movements such as twisting, but are treatable through many conservative options such as medications and physical therapy.

Causes

Tears in the knee are caused by sudden injury or blunt force trauma. When the ligaments endure too much stress, they may weaken, pinch, and tear. Activities that can induce ACL, PCL, and meniscus tears include running, contact sports like football, and kneeling. Persons more susceptible to tears often performed vigorous exercise without proper stretching or pre-conditioning.

Symptoms

The symptoms of ACL tears, PCL tears, and meniscus tears include pain, stiffness, swelling, giving way, redness, and “clicking” sounds. From the start of the injury, the symptoms usually will not present until later. If the injury is a result of age, or if the patient has experienced a tear and leaves it untreated, knee tears can lead to further weakening of surrounding muscles, joints, tendons, and tissues. This can lead to osteoarthritis.

Treatments

Before a doctor can treat a knee tear, a diagnosis must be determined through and MRI and a physical examination. Once the diagnosis has been made, your doctor will recommend rest, ice, compression, elevation, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories), and physical therapy.

After all conservative options have been extinguished, anti-inflammatory injections may be considered. Additionally, your doctor might recommend a knee arthroscopy to better evaluate the tear and reconnect the broken tissues.
