Runner sits after suffering plantar fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis is the irritation and inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is a ligamentous tissue in the bottom of the foot that connects the heel to the toes. It is common for this condition to develop due to overuse, resulting in inflammation and tearing in the plantar fascia (heel).

Often, the symptoms are the same as those of fractures or spurs. For treatments to be the most effective, it is important that the diagnosis is certain.

Causes

The exact causes of this condition are not universally agreed upon, but most doctors tend to believe that the condition develops from micro-tears in the planta fascia. With general movements of the foot, such as walking, the plantar fascia stretches. Overstretching of the tissue, or aggravation of the tears are common causes. Because the plantar fascia is necessary for walking, when surrounding areas of the body are injured, the plantar fascia often has to overcompensate.

Symptoms

Plantar fasciitis generally presents with the symptoms of sharp, stabbing pain in the heel, especially after long periods of inactivity, such as sleeping or sitting. This eventually leads to sprains, tears, strains, and weakness. Many people with plantar fasciitis experience shooting pain in the morning, upon standing, after which the pain usually subsides or disappears.

Treatments

Diagnostic studies include magnetic resonance imaging, radiographs, toe and heel walks, and sometimes blood tests and bone scans. Once the diagnosis is made, treatments may be disbursed. Treatments include NSAIDs, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory shots, and orthotic shoes are recommended. Surgery is extremely rare.

When injured surrounding tissues – such as the Achilles tendons (the tendons found at the back of the heel), calf muscles, or irregular sizes in arches – are treated with rest, ice, compression, and elevation, patients often experience a decrease in the symptoms of their plantar fascia, as well.
