About the Addictionology Department at Healthpointe

At Healthpointe, we are experts in treating those who are suffering from substance abuse disorders and wish to reduce their usage of opioid-based pain medications. Spearheaded by Dr. Ghodsian, The Department of Addictionology at Healthpointe provides thorough evaluations and evidence-based treatments. Instead of simply dealing with the psychological and social contributions to addiction, proper treatment encompasses the entire spectrum of the disorder, what the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) refers to as the bio-psycho-social framework. This treatment is designed to improve quality of life and well-being, and detoxify patients from opioid-based substance abuse.

How Addiction Affects Us

Physically, a substance abuse disorder alters the neural pathways in an addiction sufferer’s brain. Since these addictive substances provide 2 to 10 times as much dopamine as other natural activities, it is very easy to become addicted. As substance abuse continues, the body reacts by building up a tolerance for the high levels of dopamine, as well as curbing its own natural production of it. Through this, a substance abuser will need more and more of the drug to reach the same high and will typically feel intense physical cravings if they can’t attain it. As a result, they become physically addicted.

The psychological aspects of substance abuse are a bit harder to pinpoint than the physical ones, as they can’t be easily identified by their chemical systems and biological components. To put it simply, addiction psychology attempts to get at the root of the addictive behavior in the first place. It could be the experience of feeling bored, lonely, helpless, or trying to cope with an emotionally destructive relationship.

Regarding the social aspect, we all know that particular social settings can leave you more inclined towards abuse than others. For example, bars not only have a supply of alcohol for purchase but also carry the connotation of conversation, excitement, and occasionally just the comfort of a familiar face. Being in such physical environments can be conducive to a relapse, and make it all the more difficult to abstain from substance abuse.

How Addictionology can help

Our addictionology department strives to maximize recovery and aid in the detoxification process of our patients. In using the bio-psycho-social framework to its fullest potential rather than simply identifying addiction as a moral or spiritual failing, we will be able to create a multi-faceted treatment program that can make recovery and rehabilitation not only less difficult, but also more effective. We are able to help taper patient off of pain management, and provide nonaddictive highly-advanced medications to help while progressing a patient’s recovery.
