Dynamic Stabilization

What is Dynamic Stabilization?

Dynamic stabilization is an alternative to fusion. The instrumentation used in dynamic stabilization is designed to control the amount of motion between adjacent vertebrae, but it does not completely eliminate this movement, unlike fusion.

This surgical technique is performed through a less invasive approach with smaller incisions, which reduces the risk of tissue and nerve damage, and considerably shortens a patient’s recovery time.

How Dynamic Stabilization is Performed

Dynamic stabilization surgery starts much like a typical spine fusion surgery. Once any disc problems have been addressed, the surgeon places a dynamic stabilization device to limit motion at the affected disc level. Screws are used to anchor the vertebrae at two adjacent spinal levels. The screws are connected with a surgical rope to prevent excessive tension, and plastic tubes to prevent excessive compression.

The instruments and techniques used in this procedure depends on the specific type of device used to stabilize the spine.

When the stabilization device is securely in place, the surgeon then proceeds to close the incision with sutures. The entire procedure can take anywhere between one and five hours, depending on the extent of the problems that need to be addressed.

After the surgery, patients are fitted with a brace or compression garment, to prevent the implanted devices from moving during the initial healing period. Pain medication is given to help the patient manage the discomfort that is normally felt after spinal surgery.

Downtime for this type of surgery depends on the extent of the operation, as well as the overall health of the patient.
