Arthroscopy: Repair, Recovery, and Rewards

Before looking into Healthpointe’s arthroscopy services, here are a few things that you must consider for your own benefit.

  • Repair of joints

Arthroscopy is considered as a keyhole surgery for diagnosis and treatment. It is, in fact, one of the common procedures used in sports medicine because of the ease, convenience and efficacy, among other benefits, it provides for surgeons involved in the field.

The surgical procedure is usually used in the repair of damaged cartilage, the removal of fragments of loose bone or cartilage, and in the treatment of frozen shoulder (i.e., known as adhesive capsulitis with symptoms like stiffness and pain in the affected shoulder).

During the surgery, a small metal tube with fibre optics (arthroscope) is inserted into a small incision (keyhole) next to the affected joint. The fibre optics serves as a camera that sends images to the monitor, thus, allowing surgeons to make more definitive diagnoses. The arthroscope can also be attached to tiny surgical instruments for the doctor to treat the injury.

  • Rewards

Doctors at Healthpointe use arthroscopy for many types of sports-related injuries because of its many benefits. It has low risks for complications (less than 1 in 100 cases) although infections and accidental nerve damage are possible. It also provides for faster healing time, lesser post-surgery pain, and quicker resumption of normal activities as well as the opportunity to go home after the surgery.

  • Recovery

Of course, the actual recovery period will vary from one case to the next depending on several factors. These include the type of injury involved, the joint affected, and the type of procedure applied, among others.

In most cases, nonetheless, patients can perform light physical activities 1-3 weeks after the surgical procedure. Full physical activities can be resumed within 6-8 weeks after surgery.

In all cases, be sure to discuss the pros and cons of any arthroscopic procedure with your Healthpointe doctors or surgeons. Keep in mind that your career as a professional athlete, whether you are a runner or a bodybuilder, may be at stake with the procedure.

Arthroscopy is one of the medical care services provided at Healthpointe clinics, such as Healthpointe Colton, which also serves to patients in Rialto, Bloomington, San Bernardino, Loma Linda, Highgrove, and Grand Terrace.
