Foot Care and Diabetes

If you are diagnosed with diabetes, it can cause problems with your feet because diabetes can cause nerve damage. With nerve damage, you may lose feeling in your feet, which prevents you from knowing when you get sores or other injuries on your feet. Without careful attention to your feet, simple sores or injuries can then lead to serious infection and skin ulcers. Having diabetes can make infections harder to treat and they can then become deep-tissue infections. In extreme cases, this can lead to amputation.

However, there are simple things you can do to take care of your feet and prevent further complications.

  • Wash your feet every day with mild soap and lukewarm water. Make sure to dry your feet thoroughly especially between your toes.
  • Inspect your feet every day for signs of infection such as redness, blisters, or pus as well as check for swelling, pain, cuts, ingrown toenails, and sores.
  • Use lotion on your feet to keep the skin smooth. Use non-medicated powder before putting on your socks and shoes to help keep your feet dry.
  • Always wear shoes when you are on your feet. Make sure your shoes fit well and have plenty of room. Choose shoes that are made of breathable material such as leather, canvas, or suede. Replace your shoes when they show signs of wear.
  • Cut your toenails straight across to help prevent ingrown nails.
  • See your foot doctor to treat any problems, such as corns or calluses.
  • Wiggle your toes and move your feet around throughout the day to promote blood circulation in your feet.
  • Stay active and include 30 minutes of physical activity in your daily routine.
  • See a doctor about any foot problems right away to prevent it from worsening.
