Treatments for Achilles Tendon Pain

When Achilles tendon injuries occur, doctors at Healthpointe clinics have a wide array of treatments. See them at any of the Healthpointe clinics nearest you, such as in Colton where patients from Rialto, Bloomington, San Bernardino, Loma Linda, Highgrove, and Grand Terrace.

Rest: Resting the injured Achilles tendon is the first line of defense since it allows the inflammation to slowly subside.

Immobilization: Patients with more chronic or more significant symptoms will benefit from immobilization usually within a short-term period. The immobilization can come in the form of a cast or a removable walking boot depending on the severity of the injury.

Shoe Inserts: A heel wedge will lift up the heel, thus, lessening the amount of force exerted on the Achilles tendon.

Ice Application: Ice application on the affected area helps in stimulating blood flow and reducing the inflammation.

Anti-inflammatory medications: These medications help in controlling the inflammation in and around the injured tendon. Examples include ibuprofen, celebrex, and motrin, among others. Doctors usually prescribe these medications for the treatment of Achilles tendonitis but not for chronic Achilles tendinosis.

Physical therapy: Ask your doctor about the need for physical therapy in your case. Physical therapy usually involves stretching and strengthening of the muscles around the Achilles tendon.

When these methods still will not suffice for the treatment of an injured Achilles tendon, your doctor will recommend injections of cortisone or PRP. But be sure to discuss the pros and cons of these options in your case because each individual will respond differently.

And when all else fails, surgery will be considered. This is only an option after the non-surgical treatments have been adopted with little to no success. Always discuss your options with your doctor.
