Drinking Water Can Help with Fibromyalgia

So what is fibromyalgia, anyway?

First, let’s talk about where the orthopedic term fibromyalgia comes from:

Fibromyalgia is translated from the Latin word “Fibra” (fibrous tissue) and the Greek words “Myos Algos” (muscle pain). Today, fibromyalgia means chronic pain of the muscles and joints.

Chronic joint and muscle pain (especially pain that seems random, and not triggered by a specific injury) can often stem from dehydration. Dehydration can lead to water loss in the joints, which means that the natural lubrication between the joints will quickly deteriorate, which can cause the bones of the joints to rub against each other. Additionally, without enough water, the cartilage (which is a sort of ‘cushion’ that is found in the joints) will start to break apart or wear down. Not only will this result in pain, but it can also mean permanent damage down the road.

Of course, fibromyalgia can’t be cured simply by drinking water. But the side effects of dehydration (such as pain and fatigue) can!

So, how much water should you drink?

Well, that depends. The general rule of thumb is eight 8-ounce glasses a day. But if you live in warm climates and have an active lifestyle, you should be drinking more, until you feel replenished. Be sure to spread out your water intake throughout the day.

Is there such a thing as too much?

Drinking too much water is  possible, and can lead to a ‘drowning’ of your body’s systems. But, this is extremely rare. Drinking too much water is almost impossible. If you compulsively reach for water – even when you are not thirsty – you are doing your body good. Just don’t drink gallons (or other insane amounts) in a short period of time.
