3 Things You Didn’t Know About Disc Disorder

3 Things You Didn’t Know About Disc Disorder

Despite advances in medical technology, diagnosing back pain from disc disorder can sometimes be a hit-and-miss.

Fortunately, you can reduce confusion with the diagnostic process with these three useful insights.

#1. A Disc Disorder Is Not Always Painful

Diseased or damaged discs, which can be caused by wear and tear (i.e., repetitive motions, old age) as well as trauma, may not result in observable symptoms, particularly pain. Studies have shown that many people over the age of 40 with disc disorders have asymptomatic conditions (i.e., little to no apparently related symptoms). Even those who undergo an MRI scan may not have their disc disorder detected.

The severity of the disc disorder detected on an MRI scan will not always correlate or correspond to the frequency, intensity and duration of pain or other symptoms.

#2. Determining the Cause of Pain Takes Time

Your Healthpointe doctor will usually conduct a physical examination coupled with an assessment of your medical history and symptoms in determining the cause of your pain. You may then be asked to undergo diagnostic exams, usually a radiographic test like an x-ray, CT scan, or MRI scan, to confirm the diagnosis and acquire more information about your treatment options.

#3 Surgeries are the Final Option

Your doctor will only propose surgery if non-surgical options have little to no effect and surgery has not been deemed too risky. You should discuss the pros and cons of any possible surgery before agreeing to it.
