Facts About Chemical Peels

The results of a chemical peel partly depend on its depth, on the type of chemical used, and the duration of its application on the skin. Dermatologists and patients should then thoroughly discuss the expected results of your scheduled chemical peel so that realistic expectations can be set early on.

Of course, the results of the chemical peel will also depend on other factors including your skin type (i.e., lighter-skinned people usually have better results than darker-skinned people), your skin care regimen before and after the procedure (i.e., use of sun protection), and your lifestyle. Even your dermatologist’s level of experience in chemical peels will affect your personal results, so choose carefully.

With that said, here are the three types of chemical peels, their process, results, and side effects- that you can discuss with your dermatologist.

Superficial Peel

This is performed on an outpatient basis since there is no need for anesthesia and there is little discomfort involved afterwards. You can immediately return to your daily activities since the skin heals quickly with minimal peeling although the skin may look pink for a few hours.

Due to the shallow depth involved, a superficial peel will only slightly reduce the appearance of sun damage, fine lines, and wrinkles. Several sessions may be required to achieve the desired results.

Your skin will be cleaned before the chemical peel starts. The chemical, which may be in solid (i.e., paste) or liquid form, is applied on the skin using a small brush, applicators, or gauze before being left on for several minutes. It will then be wiped off afterwards.

Medium Peel

This is similar in many aspects to a superficial peel but the chemical will be left on the skin for a longer period, thus, the deeper depth of penetration. You may experience more pain (i.e., discomfort) with a medium peel because of the stronger chemicals and because of the longer application (i.e., soaking of the skin) period.

You will be provided with a pain reliever and an oral sedative for lessening your pain and anxiety. Additionally, cool compresses and fans will be used for reducing the burning sensation.

If you have an uneven skin tone as well as fine lines, age spots, or other signs of sun damage, then a medium peel is in your near future. Just set realistic expectations as it can take 3-6 months for the results to be visible.

Deep Peel

This is the most painful yet most effective type of chemical peel; not to mention that it takes 45-60 minutes of treatment time. Fortunately, you will be given pain relievers and an oral sedative, usually in the form of an intravenous injection, for effective management of your pain and anxiety. Prior to treating a large area, your dermatologist may administer a general anesthesia and provide you with a heart monitor.

A deep peel will eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, even tighten the skin, for a more youthful look. Indeed, the results are dramatic but there’s a caveat – you cannot have repeated deep peels since the phenol, among other chemicals used, can damage the skin with repeated use.
