Spring Allergies

March 20th marked the first day of spring in North America. Spring is the time of year that we tend to associate with seasonal allergies. Each year, 35 million Americans suffer from seasonal allergies as the trees start to bloom and the pollen gets airborne.

What causes spring allergies?

The biggest spring allergy trigger is pollen, which are tiny grains that are released into the air by trees, grasses, and weeds. As the pollen become airborne, it can get into the nose of someone who is allergic causing their immune system to go into overdrive. The immune system reacts because it mistakenly sees the pollen as foreign invaders. When the immune system reacts, it releases antibodies to attack the allergens, which leads to the release of chemicals called histamines into the blood. The histamines trigger the runny nose, itchy eyes, and other symptoms of allergies.

What are the symptoms of spring allergies?

Some of the symptoms of spring allergies can include:

  • Runny nose
  • Watery eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Itchy eyes and nose
  • Dark circles under the eyes

Airborne allergens can also trigger symptoms of asthma, which can make breathing difficult and lead to coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

How can I manage spring allergies?

Some tips to manage your spring allergies include:

  • Staying indoors whenever the pollen count is very high (usually during mornings).
  • Keep your doors and windows closed to keep allergens out.
  • Use an air purifier.
  • Clean bookshelves, vents, or places where pollen or dust can collect.
  • Vacuum twice a week
  • Wash your hair after going outside since pollen can collect there.

When should I see a doctor for my allergies?

You should see a doctor about your allergies when:

  • Your symptoms last for more than 3 months.
  • The symptoms get in the way of your life such as making it harder to sleep.
  • Over the counter drugs are not helping.
  • It leads to other health problems such as chronic nasal congestion or ear infections.
