A high fever or high temperature is not an illness by itself, but rather it is usually a symptom of an underlying condition such as an infection. Some common causes of fever can include:
- Infections of the ear, lung, skin, throat, bladder, or kidney
- Side effects of drugs
- Vaccines
- Blood clots
- Autoimmune disease such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis
When should I seek medical attention for a fever?
- For Children – seek immediate medical attention if:
- You have an infant younger than 4 months old with a rectal temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or above
- Your child has a fever above 104 degrees Fahrenheit
- Your child looks very sick
- Your child is drowsy or very fussy
- Your child has a weakened immune system or other medical problems
- Your child has a seizure
- The fever is accompanied by other symptoms such as rash, sore throat, headache, stiff neck, or earache
- For Adults – seek immediate medical attention if the person has:
- A high fever that does not respond to fever-reducing medicine
- A stiff neck, is confused, or has trouble staying awake
- A severe cough, coughs up blood, or has trouble breathing
- Severe stomach pain, vomits repeatedly, or has severe diarrhea
- Been exposed to extremely hot weather and feels hot but is not sweating
- Pain with urination, back pain, or shaking chills
- Severe sore throat, severe swelling of the throat, or a persistent earache
- A history of serious illness such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, or AIDS
- A high body temperature that lasts more than three days or gets worse
