Healing from a Concussion
Have you been diagnosed with a concussion?
Don’t panic because your brain can usually recover from a concussion. Visit the neurology department at any of our clinics, such as the one in Temecula by Murrieta, Fallbrook, Wildomar, Canyon Lake, and Sun City, for proper management of your concussion so that you can recover well.
Here are a few things that you should remember about getting back on your feet after a concussion.
Slow Down on Your Brain Use
Think of your brain as a computer – it will slow down in its functional ability after a concussion. In order to get it back up to its normal speed, you have to give your brain downtime – no texting, no video games, no watching television, and no using the computer even when you feel and appear fine. This is because your brain has to work harder to keep track of the movements on the screen that, in turn, can worsen your brain injury.
Fortunately, your brain requires just a relatively short amount of time for its downtime. Depending on your symptoms, your doctor will usually recommend approximately 7 to 10 days of downtime. You will be re-evaluated after the period to determine your progress so wait for your doctor’s orders before returning to your normal activities, especially related to sports.
You should also discuss the types of activities that you can perform during the recovery period. You may be required to skip on work, for example, for a few days so that you can rest at home.
Get Back to Normal
But even when your doctor says that you can now go back to your normal routine, you must still take it easy. You should never go all out in a sudden manner since your brain injury may relapse.
Get back to your brain-challenging activities, including work, in a gradual manner, such as a few minutes at a time. When you feel a headache coming on, stop whatever you are doing as well.
Of course, you should reduce the risks for another concussion by adopting preventive measures. You should wear a helmet, when necessary, wear a seatbelt in the car, and follow the rules of the game.
