Stretching Exercises for Back Pain
Did you know that limitations in the motions of your spine including its contiguous muscles, ligaments and tendons can make your back pain worse? You may believe that engaging in stretching exercises for your back can worsen your back pain especially when each movement brings on another wave of pain. But this is not so!
Of course, you will also find that it can take weeks, even months, of performing stretching exercises on a regular basis before the spine and its contiguous muscles, ligaments and tendons can be mobilized. But you will be rewarded in time because sustained and significant relief from back pain usually follows the increased range of motion.
The more that you perform stretching exercises, the more your spine can increase its range of motion, the more pain relief you can enjoy.
But before planning your stretching exercises, you must consult with a Healthpointe doctor and physical therapist for the best types as well as the duration, frequency and precautions regarding stretching exercises. You can visit any of the clinics, such as the Colton clinic, which is accessible to people from Rialto, Bloomington, San Bernardino, Loma Linda, Highgrove, and Grand Terrace, too.
Keep these general tips in mind when stretching your back:
- Wear comfortable clothes
- Avoid pushing your body to its limits. If you feel pain in any position, then you should first stop and assess the cause.
- Slowly ease into the stretch. Avoid bouncing because you can tear muscles if you do.
- Choose an area that you can move in freely, such as on the floor with no obstructions as you stretch.
- Hold your stretch for 20-30 seconds, which will allow your joints to become loose, so to speak.
- Repeat the stretch for 5-10 times depending on your tolerance.
Don’t just stretch your back muscles either. You must also stretch your neck and shoulders as these are connected to your back, not to mention that a stiff back is often accompanied by a stiff neck.
Come and visit any of our clinics, such as the Garden Grove Healthpointe clinic for discussions about the best stretching exercises for your back pain. We are open to Stanton, Santa Ana, and Westminster patients, too.
