How to Sleep for Back Pain Relief
If you have back pain, then even sleeping can be difficult. Whether you are constantly shifting positions all night, or are afraid to move – because the slightest movement will aggravate your pain – we understand. Healthpointe’s back pain doctors devote hours every day to evaluating the causes of back pain, and providing customized treatments and advice for pain relief.
Whether your insomnia aggravates your back pain, or whether your back pain causes your insomnia, we’re willing to bet that you’ve tried everything – anything – for a good night’s sleep. But don’t give up just yet! Here are four tips you may not have known about, regarding what to do – and not to do – when you sleep, to avoid back pain:
- Invest in a medium-firm to firm mattress. Your bed contributes more to your back pain than you think. Not having enough support can cause irreversible back pain. On the other hand, the same is true for not enough cushion. Ultimately, the most important factor when choosing a mattress is how you feel when you are on it.
- Sleep on your back. As opposed to sleeping on your side, sleeping on your back helps to more evenly distribute your weight. In order to achieve the most comfortable position, try gently stretching your back – while lying on your back. This slight movement will also help to keep joints from stiffening.
- Try a pillow under your back. This can help relieve pressure on the area of pain. Some patients instead prefer a pillow under their knees, which can also help to distribute weight.
- Create a routine. Every night before sleeping, do the same thing. This will help kick your body into sleep-preparation mode, and prevent you from stressing out about the day’s worries. When your mind is at ease, it becomes easier for your body to follow.
Remember, for professional and individualized medical advice, always to talk to your Healthpointe doctor first, before trying any new treatment.
