How to Sit Like a Gentleman: Tips and Tricks to Sit Politely and Avoid Knee Pain
If a man in your life has knee pain, then we’re willing to bet this: When he goes to sit down on a couch, you don’t just see it, you hear it. Some call them “dad” sounds: grunts, groans, gasps – and then, once he has managed to find a comfortable position – the great sigh of relief.
Now, we are no Emily Post, but we think sitting – especially in public – should not be an audible spectacle. Make no doubt about it – this is easier said than done, especially with knee pain. But with a few tweaks in his sitting routine, he may be able to not only lessen his pain a little, but also sit a little taller, gentler, and – most importantly – quieter!
- Keep good posture. This is essential in polite society, even when not sitting. When you have good posture, you not only appear confident and tall, but you also are using your core to carry you. In the long run, this will strengthen your back muscles and keep the weight off your knees.
- Don’t cross your legs, which can contribute to knee pain. But do keep them together. Or, prop them up slightly on another chair. Just don’t assume the “domineering”, “alpha male” legs-wide-open stance. No one will think you’re more “manly” because of this.
- In the process of sitting, hold on to a nearby prop for steadiness. If you hold your knees – as many do – you are pressing on the joints, which can cause even more strain.

It’s good to know that I shouldn’t be crossing my legs. I tend to do that every time I sit down, so I suppose I should stop. My family has a history of knee problems and I don’t want that to continue with me.
Props to you for taking steps to maintain your health!
