Resection of Vascular Malformation

What is a Resection of Vascular Malformation in the Brain/Spine?

Resection of vascular malformations is a procedure done to remove the abnormal blood vessels that cause vascular malformations.

Abnormal blood vessel clusters are usually congenital, which means they form while the fetus develops and grows as the child grows. They are usually asymptomatic unless they reach a certain point in development where they may then lead to seizures, hemorrhage, or blood flow problems.

There are several types of vascular malformations that can lead to problems such as stroke, hemorrhage, and seizures. Among the most dangerous clinically are the arteriovenous malformations, or AVMs. AVM’s may be found in either the brain or spinal cord and may therefore lead to trouble with mobility.

Not all vascular malformations are obvious and may only be detected with an MRI or an angiogram (an x-ray study of the blood vessels using a dye known as “contrast”). Some vascular malformations can be managed with medication and other non-surgical methods but others can be quite dangerous and may need surgery.

Traditional Vascular Malformation Treatment

Although there are several more modern treatment methods used to treat vascular malformations like AVMs, most Neurosurgeons still lean towards the more traditional treatment method which is surgery. Resection of vascular malformations involves removing the so-called “nidus” of the malformation in its entirety to prevent a recurrence. If done correctly, surgery is considered a permanent solution.

When performing AVM resection surgery on the brain or spinal cord, the patients are put under general anesthesia in order to keep them asleep throughout the whole procedure. Neurosurgeons then make the necessary incisions and drill the holes needed to get access to the malformation.

The “nidus” of the AVM is removed carefully, avoiding damage to nearby vessels and structures. Surgery is commonly done when the AVM is in an accessible location. Other less invasive treatment options may be more appropriate if the AVM is found deep in the spine or brain to avoid damaging tissues that can affect a person’s normal neurological function.
