Did You Know: Good Dental Care Can Prevent Diabetes
Gum Disease and Diabetes
It’s Halloween night.
You just got home from a long night of partying.
You are exhausted, and the only thing you really want to do is change out of your Harley Quinn costume and fall into bed.
You can skip brushing your teeth just this once, right? One night isn’t gonna hurt!
Well, maybe. But we’re willing to bet that in a few seconds, you’ll find the energy to get to the bathroom sink! Here’s why:
Research shows that neglecting to brush and floss goes far beyond cavities: it can lead to diabetes! The reason has to do with gum disease.
Gum disease occurs when the gums are infected with bacteria and plaque. This infection can seep into the bloodstream, which can trigger defensive actions from your body, such as sudden spikes in blood sugar levels. Repeated spikes in blood sugar, left untreated, can eventually have serious effects on the metabolic system, including insulin resistance.
How Can I Prevent Gum Disease?
There are several causes of gum disease, including genetics. But as long as you brush your teeth two times a day (paying extra attention to your gums! Gently brush in circular movements for best results), floss at least once a day, and get regular cleanings from a dentist, you are already decreasing the chances of gum disease.
The takeaway? Most dentists agree: regularity is key. ‘Tis better – when it comes down to it – to brush twice a day in shorter bursts, than to try to make up for lost time by brushing in one longer session. In other words, save the cramming for college finals week!
Your teeth and gums – and perhaps, ultimately, your metabolic system – will thank you!
