What Causes Arthritis?
Arthritis is caused by inflammation of the joints. Depending on the type, it can impact many different parts of the body. How arthritis occurs varies depending on multiple factors, such as damage to the joints from overuse due to injury, a genetic autoimmune response, or even natural aging.
- Biological sex; Women develop rheumatoid arthritis more often than men, and men are more likely to develop gout.
- Repetitive use injuries; This can commonly stem from participation in sports, such as running and tennis, or laborious jobs, such as painters and carpenters.
- Family history increases your likelihood of developing arthritis.
- Age; The probability of developing arthritis, such as osteoarthritis, increases as we get into the evening years.
- Obesity puts strain on the joints and ligaments in the body due to excess weight, and can increase your chances of developing arthritis.
