World Arthritis Day 2022: It’s in your hands, take action

World Arthritis Day is celebrated annually on October 12.

This year’s theme is “It’s in your hands, take action.” This day is meant to draw focus on bringing people together for support, care, and resources regarding arthritis. It also aims to raise awareness and provide education. Here are some facts about arthritis that you may not know.

Did you know that…

-Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the US?

-There are more than 100 different types of arthritis and arthritis-related conditions?

-Arthritis can affect people of all ages, including children?

What Causes Arthritis?

Arthritis is caused by inflammation of the joints. Depending on the type, it can impact many different parts of the body. How arthritis occurs varies depending on multiple factors, such as damage to the joints from overuse due to injury, a genetic autoimmune response, or even natural aging.

Some risk factors for arthritis include:

  • Biological sex; Women develop rheumatoid arthritis more often than men, and men are more likely to develop gout.
  • Repetitive use injuries; This can commonly stem from participation in sports, such as running and tennis, or laborious jobs, such as painters and carpenters.
  • Family history increases your likelihood of developing arthritis.
  • Age; The probability of developing arthritis, such as osteoarthritis, increases as we get into the evening years.
  • Obesity puts strain on the joints and ligaments in the body due to excess weight, and can increase your chances of developing arthritis.

What Are the Symptoms of Arthritis?

To treat and alleviate arthritis:

-Enjoy a healthy diet of leafy vegetables, legumes, fruits, ginger, and fiber rich foods.

-Maintain or lose weight with daily, low impact exercise, at least 15 to 30 minutes per day.

Quit smoking, and decrease alcohol intake to limit inflammation

-Apply ice or heat when your joints became painful.
