Foot and Ankle Specialists
About Foot and Ankle Specialists
Foot and Ankle Specialists are physicians who diagnose, treat, and prevent conditions of the musculoskeletal system of the foot and ankle. Injuries treated include fractures, sprains, sports injuries, arthritis, nerve disorders, bunions, and infections. They also specialize in diagnosing and treating traumatic injuries, chronic problems, and work-related injuries affecting the foot and ankle.
Degrees and Education
Foot and Ankle Specialists are required to complete four years of training in a podiatric medical school along with three years of hospital residency training. This training is similar to that of other physicians, and they can specialize in surgery, sports medicine, diabetic care, and wound care.
After completing their four year podiatric medical school, these specialists must then complete their surgical based residency; a hands-on post-doctoral training. Fellowship-training is also available after residency is completed where they can obtain further knowledge on the foot and ankle traumatology.
