What is a Lumbar Epidural Spinal Injection?
A lumbar epidural spinal injection is intended to relieve patients of severe or chronic lower back and radiating leg pain, when conservative treatment such as medication, physical therapy, and other non-surgical medical care proves ineffective in treating a patient’s discomfort.
The medications (generally a combination of a corticosteroid with a local anesthetic) are injected directly into the patient’s spinal canal at the most affected area, where the pain is being caused. This is to provide pain relief, and to reduce any inflammation and swelling.
Although most practitioners will agree that this is a form of temporary relief (anywhere from a week to a year), an epidural can provide ample pain relief to allow a patient to advance with a therapeutic physical therapy program.

How a Lumbar Epidural Spinal Injection is Performed
Patients will usually be asked to change into a hospital gown and lie on their stomach, giving the doctor a clean, clear visual of the injection site.
After the injection site is cleaned with an anti-bacterial solution, a local anesthetic is injected, prepping the area for the larger epidural needle.
The doctor will then guide the needle using a fluoroscope, targeting the structure of the patient’s spine that needs relief. The procedure generally takes 10-30 minutes.
