How the Weather Affects Your Allergies

How Does the Weather Affect My Allergies?

Changes in the weather can definitely impact and trigger your allergies symptoms. Some of the common weather triggers can include:

  • Heat: During hot summer days, air pollution is the worse. Smog and ozone in the air can trigger your allergies.
  • Dry and windy days: The wind blows pollen into the air, which can increase your hay fever symptoms.
  • Rainy or humid days: Mold and dust mites can grow in moisture, which can exacerbate your allergy symptoms.
  • Cold air: The cold air can shock your airways, causing a coughing fit.

Changes in seasons can also have a big effect on your allergies.

  • Summer: Grass pollen during early summer can trigger allergy symptoms. In the later months of summer, ragweed and other weeds can be a problem.
  • Fall: Ragweed season usually ends in October but mold tends to be the worse during the cold months.
  • Winter: Indoor allergens, such as dander and dust mites, can be a big problem during winter as you spend more time indoors.
  • Spring: Plants tend to release pollens in February and March. Pollen is a common trigger of allergies for many people.

What can I do to manage my allergy symptoms?

While you cannot change the weather and there is no way to avoid seasonal changes, there are some ways you can still manage and reduce your allergy symptoms.

  • Pay attention to the weather and reduce your time outside when you are likely to face certain triggers.
  • Prepare an allergy kit, which may include antihistamines.
  • Prepare your own home by using air-conditioning to filter out mold and pollen, or use a dehumidifier to minimize mold growth and dust mites.
  • Seek medical attention to obtain prescribed medications and allergy shots, which may help to keep your allergies under control.
